Championship report:

Malvern Table Tennis League Individual Championships 2010 had over 60 players, with ages ranging from 82 to only 9, enjoyed a great day’s competitive sport at the Malvern Table Tennis League’s Individual Championships held at The Forum, Malvern Theatres on Sunday 28th February. The Main Singles, sponsored by PaperStation Ltd. was won by Wayne Chopping, in a comfortable win over reigning champion Dave White. Dave, lacking match practice due to business commitments, had difficulty coping with Wayne’s backhand topspin and block, losing in three straight games. This will have been a most welcome victory for Wayne who has contested the later stages of this event since 2006 without ever clinching the top spot.

In the Roy Holland Veterans Singles, Dave Woodyatt was another title holder to lose his crown, beaten by Harry Jutle in five games, the result in doubt until half way through the fifth game when Harry drew ahead to clinch the match.

In another close encounter in the Express TV Main Doubles, holders Mike Keeley and Joe Higgs beat Dave White and Alan Salisbury in five games.

In the Brian Thompson Division one Singles event, Joe Higgs avenged his earlier defeat by Wayne Chopping in the Main Singles semi-final winning in five games.

In the Ledbury Exhaust Division two Singles, John Phillips, unbeaten in the League so far this season, faced Steve Mulka in a match where neither player could gain a commanding advantage until tiredness became a factor, enabling Steve to run out winner 11-5 in the fifth and final game.

A Cadet (Banded) Singles competition for promising young players under 15 years of age from the League’s coaching club was won by Simon Wikeley with runner-up Andy Bates. These two players then went into the semi-finals of the main Cadet Singles event, sponsored by Paytons Solicitors, in which they acquitted themselves well against Stan Mason and Matt Hodges. In the final Stan beat Matt in four games to retain his title. Joanna Tiler was the winner of a Cadet Girls event for a group from the coaching club.

In one of the biggest upsets of the day, Stan Mason and Matt Hodges beat the father and son team of Steve and James Mulka in the Meredith Brothers Division two Doubles in four games, after having accounted for Ray Davies and Bill Smith in the semi-final by the same margin.

The Junior Singles, for players under 18, played as a round robin, was won by Stan Mason with runner-up Rory Brittain. Similarly a round robin in the Ladies Singles event saw Ann Barnes retain her title for the 5th year running. The runner-up was Beryl Shammon.

The Mixed Doubles final saw a convincing win by Ann Barnes and Nigel Foreshew over Dave and Liz Hallam. Ann has been part of a winning team in this event since its inception in 2006.

An interesting feature this year, demonstrating the wide appeal of table tennis to all ages in the Malvern Hills area, was the participation of two local families, one from Malvern, and one from Ledbury, who each had three generations of players taking part in the championships.

Division Reports for week 20:

Having recovered from the postponed matches due to bad weather, results in the second division of the Malvern Table Tennis League as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd have come in thick and fast.

The places in the division are little changed and Ripple hold their top position by just one point from Rangers and Maulers in spite of only managing to draw with X – Police, but taking three points from MP Crackpots when four sets went to four games and two went to five.

As might be expected from two teams so close, the Rangers and Maulers drew their match with seven of the ten sets needing extra games. Rangers won eight sets against Crackpots ‘B’, but Maulers have a match in hand.

The tightest match out of these nine results was the one between Allsorts ‘B’ and Abbeydowne when thirteen of the forty games they played were won by just two points and another eleven by three points. Stan Mason won all his singles and the doubles with Rory Brittain who won one, with Matt Hodges winning two singles for Allsorts. Bill Lucas took two and Roy Holland one for Abbeydowne.

Matt White was the star player for X – Police by winning all his six singles and James Mulka saved Devils being whitewashed by Nomads.

Division Reports for week 19:

In a quiet week just two results from the Paperstation Ltd sponsored Malvern Table Tennis League division one came in, with CSSC Ramblers keeping alive their hopes of finishing in the top two as they defeated YMCA Vulcans 7-3. Chris Hewitt and Graham Thompson both won their three singles and the doubles for Ramblers, while for Vulcans Jim Ahern, Beryl Shammon and John Phillips all beat Adrian Fray who was playing up from division two to gain a point. Ahern and Shammon both took Thompson to four games before going down 9-11, 16-14, 7-11, 11-13 and 7-11, 10-12, 12-10, 9-11 respectively.
Ledbury Collection gained maximum points when they beat Crackpots 'E' 9-1, Nigel Foreshew and Harry Jutle won all their singles and the doubles with Ann Barnes winning twice. Colin Dolding gained the consolation for Crackpots by beating Barnes 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, 5-11, 11-6 and was close to beating Jutle, going down 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 1-11.

Division Reports for week 18:

In division one of the Paperstation Ltd sponsored Malvern Table Tennis League Pterodactyl Old Boys stayed top courtesy of an 8-2 win over YMCA Vulcans. Wayne Chopping won his three singles in straight games and the doubles with Graham Collier, who won twice as did Ian Bell. While for Vulcans Jim Ahern kept up his good form for the season by winning two games to gain a point for the visitors.

Manor Park Cavaliers gained a hard fought 7-3 win over Ledbury Collection where four of the sets required five games and luckily for Cavaliers they won the lot with three of them decided by just two points in the final game. Joe Higgs won his three singles for Cavaliers, Jack Higgs won twice and they teamed up to win the doubles, with Mike Keeley winning once. For Collection Nigel Foreshew won twice and in doing so became the first person this season to defeat Jack after his recent comeback. Harry Jutle won once. Ann Barnes was particularly unlucky not to win any, losing 10-12 in the fifth against Keeley and losing to Joe Higgs in the match of the night 13-11, 11-8, 11-13, 6-11, 11-13.

Manor Park Express defeated Crackpots 'E' 8-2 in a match that was closer than the score line suggests with four of the sets going to five before Pete Griffiths and Ray Page won their three singles with good support coming from Dave Woodyatt who won twice. Colin Dolding beat Woodyatt in five and then teamed up with Dave Steen to win the doubles against Woodyatt and Page 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 1-11, 11-8 to gain a point for Crackpots. The closest game of the night was between Messer’s Woodyatt and Steen with Woodyatt from Express winning 11-13, 12-10, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7.

CSSC Ramblers gained three points in a 7-3 win over Ledbury Lions thanks to Alan Salisbury and Graham Thompson who both won their three singles and the doubles. While Lions gained a point courtesy of Steve Meredith, Gordon Stables and Mike Morgan who all beat Ian Backhurt in what was his first game of the season.

In Division two, both Crackpots ‘B’ and CSSC Nomads played twice with the two teams having mixed fortunes in their games. Nomads whitewashed Crackpots ‘B’, but only just. Five sets went to four games and Stan Ginn took Adrian Fray to 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-13, 12-10. The winning trio were Dave Hayes, Adrian Fray and Geoff Davies. When the same Nomads players met Manor Park Maulers, only Dave Hayes was able to win a singles set and he teamed up with Adrian for a doubles win, but Maulers’ players Ray Davies, Bill Smith and Don James all won two singles. Bill’s set with Dave was as tight as any can be and ended with a score of 14-12, 10-12, 9-11, 13-11, 9-11 and Ray’s set with Dave went to 11-5, 12-10, 9-11, 9-11, 9-11.

Crackpots ‘B’ then played Manor Park Allsorts ‘B’, again half the sets went to 4 games and one to 5. Ted Cates won three singles and the doubles with Alan Forsdike (who won one singles) and Stan Ginn won two, but Stan Mason won two and Matt Hodges took one for the Allsorts.

The Manor Park Devils had a sparkling James Mulka to thank for winning his three singles and earning them a point. He had been to coaching and tried out new rubbers, gaining in confidence. In the last game of the evening Ed Palmer took him to five games after losing the first two. Ed, Stephen Lindner and Dina Murdie all won two games, with Ed and Stephen wining the doubles.

OTT won another match in which 7 sets went to four games and three to five. Bill Lucas won two and Len Hitchman one for Abbeydowne, with Dean Lewis winning three, Alan Spink two and Alan Preece one for OTT.

Handicap Report and results for round 2:

The 2nd round of the Malvern table tennis league handicap competition brought together two of the top teams in division 1, but the contest between CSSC Ramblers and Manor Park Express turned out to be an anti-climax. Ramblers were under strength and were soundly beaten by Express. Graham Thompson took 2 points of Dave Woodyatt in their set 9-11, 11-2, 8-11, 10-12. Alan Salisbury also gained 2 points off Pete Griffiths by 13-15, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7, but Express came out on top in all of the other games. Mark Jones remained unbeaten during the evening.

Manor Park Maulers moved into round 3 with a hard fought 16.5 point victory over Division 2 rivals Manor Park Crackpots. For the winners Don James was on good form and won all of his singles sets comfortably. He was given good support by both Bill Smith and Ray Davies. The highlight of the evening for Crackpots was the doubles in which the pairing of Ed Palmer and Stephen Lindner won 11-7, 11-4, 11-3, 10-12.

Division 2 leaders Ripple also won their way though to the next round with a 31.5 point win over Abbeydowne. Ripple gradually reduced their opponents handicap advantage, but Bill Lucas kept Abbeydowne in the game with a battling performance typified by a score line of 13-15, 8-11, 14-16, 15-13 against Roger Davies.

In the last 2nd round match Division 1 leaders Manor Park Cavaliers beat YMCA Vulcans by 15 points.

In the secondary competition there was a very close match between Poolbrook Rangers and CSSC Nomads. The game swung won way then the other until Nomads inched home by 40 points. Crucially in the doubles Tony Hughes and Dave Hayes beat Nick Haggar and Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart 11-5, 11-9, 14-12. For Rangers Richard Cullis was on top of his game and remained unbeaten.

Crackpots E had Colin Dolding to thank for their 12 point victory over X-police. He gave away very few points in any of his games to frustrate his opponents. Colin was given goo support by Dave Steen and James Palmer whilst for the Police Malcolm Dalley will be pleased to have taken a game off both Dave and James. At the end of the evening Matt White had a close contest with James 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11.

Division Reports for week 15:

Ahead of this weeks match reports the league were sad to hear of the death of The Revd. Ken Jordan, who led a team and played for many years from the Abbey Road Baptist School Room and latterly from Lansdowne Methodist Hall.

In division one of the Malvern Table Tennis League as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd Pterodactyl Old Boys returned to the top of the table following a 9-1 win over Manor Park Travellers. Travellers got off to a good start when Martin Snee defeated Graham Collier 11-9, 11-7, 11-9 in the first game of the evening, but after that it was all plain sailing for Old Boys with Wayne Copping and Ian Bell both unbeaten on the night. In the 2nd division the weather played havoc with teams being able to get to venues, several fixtures have had to be postponed over the last three weeks, but some teams have either made supreme efforts to get to matches or have been lucky with their home nights being free of snow.

Ripple and Poolbrook Rangers both only played once, but retain their positions at the top of the second division table thanks to four point wins for them both. Poolbrook played CSSC Nomads where five sets went to four games and two of them to five. Dynamos played Ripple when James Mulka was the player who saved the whitewash and came very close to winning another set when he lost by 9-11 in his fifth game against Peter Quy.

Division Reports for week 11:

In an exciting week for division 2 of the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, seven matches were played and surprisingly there were four draws.

Poolbrook Rangers played twice and drew both matches. Against their close rivals, MP Maulers, it was a tight match with a fair result. Maulers started well with Kevin Howard and Ray Davies’ attacking play being too strong for Richard Cullis and Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart. Rangers’ Nick Haggard did well to hold off Don James’ fightback and Alasdair’s dogged defence was just too consistent for Kevin. The doubles was a tremendous match with Maulers, Don and Kevin winning 4 points in a row to clinch victory in the fifth game with a score of 11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9. The last three singles were extremely tense and could have gone either way. One went to Maulers in the fourth and the other two to Rangers in the fifth. The match finished at 1055 pm, at 5 all.

In Rangers second match of the week only two sets were won in three games. Four sets needed four games and the other four needed five. Richard Cullis, for Rangers was the best player taking three singles, with Nick Haggar winning two and Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart one. Roger Davies took two for Ripple and the doubles with Pete Nash. Pete and Peter Quy each won one.

The Devils were delighted to get two points from their match with Crackpots ‘B’. James Mulka was their star player by winning three and he won the doubles with Liz Hallam, who also won a singles. Ted Cates and Stan Ginn each won two for Crackpots, with Tim Snee contributing one.

X – Police were involved in yet another long evening resulting in a draw with Nomads. Half the sets required five games and in spite of Dave Hayes winning all his singles for Nomads, he was taken to five in two of them. He also had five games in the doubles, but lost out to the pairing of Steve Mulka and Matt White who had each won two singles.

Manor Park Crackpots acquitted themselves well against Abbeydowne by winning 7-3. Stephen Lindner won three singles and the doubles with Ed Palmer, who won two singles, Dina Murdie won one. Bill Lucas won two for Abbeydowne and Len Hitchman one.

Charlie Burford won three for Dynamos and was supported well by Collette James with two wins and Ian Sage with one. Matt Hodges won two for Allsorts and Stan Mason one.

Dean Lewis again saved the whitewash for OTT and managed to earn them a point, but Maulers also playing in their 2nd game of the week, were otherwise too strong for them.

In division one Manor Park Cavaliers  moved up into second place in the table following a 10-0 win over Manor Park Travellers. Joe Higgs, Trevor Simmons and Mike Keeley all won in straight games, while Ken Hipwell was unlucky against Keeley going down 10-12, 9-11, 10-12.

Title contenders CSSC Ramblers moved into third place with a 7-3 win over Manor Park Express and are just four points behind the leaders Pterodactyl Old Boys with a game in hand. Against Express Chris Hewitt won his three singles and he teamed up with Graham Thompson, who won twice, to win the doubles. For Express Mark Jones won two singles and Dave Woodyatt one, but unfortunately Ray Page had to retire hurt, but before he did so he was involved in the closest game of the evening when he lost in five to Thompson 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 13-11, 13-15.

In the match between Ledbury Lions and YMCA Vulcans six of the sets went to five games with Lions gaining a 5-5 draw courtesy of Mike Morgans’ win over Jim Ahern in the final set of the evening 7-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8. This gave Morgan three wins on the night and he teamed up with Gordon Stables, who won once, to take the doubles. Vulcans wins came from Ahern who won twice and Dave Williams, in his first outing of the season, also won two and lost narrowly to Morgan 11-7 in the fifth while John Cawthra defeated Neville Meredith 11-3 in the fifth.

Manor Park Express receive bye

This week in the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, the coveted Handicap knockout competition began with a number of exciting matches in round one. The results in so far have proven to have some very close matches and the highlight was the 1 point victory by last years winners, 2nd division team, Ripple over the 1st division side MP Pumas. Pumas seemed to be heading for victory, but towards the end of the evening Pete Nash took a game off Jon Dyke and Nick Price conceded a game to Roger Davies. Victory in these two games proved just enough to see Ripple home.

In another 1st against 2nd division match, YMCA Vulcans won by 1 point at the expense of Poolbrook Rangers, this time in favour of the higher division team. The game fluctuated throughout, but the doubles proved critical when John Cawhra and Jim Ahern beat Richard Cullis and Alistair Maxwel-Stewart 11-8, 11-2, 11-8, 11-7. Beryl Shammon made a welcome return to the competition and held her own against all of her opponents.

1st division leaders MP Cavaliers moved into the second round of the competition, beating 2nd division CSSC Nomads by 5 points. Cavaliers played with ruthless efficiency to overcome the handicap of 250 points and some stalwart resistance. For the Nomads Dave Hayes did well to take a game off both Mike Keeley and Trevor Simmons.

Newcomers to the Malvern league OTT, hoped to beat one of the 1st division heavyweights in CSSC Ramblers, but failed by the narrow margin of 22 points. Dean Lewis will have been pleased with his performance as he made Chris Hewitt, Graham Thompson and Alan Salisbury work hard for their victories.

MP Crackpots moved into the second round of the competition with a comfortable 44 point victory over their 2nd division rivals X-police. For the winners Stephen Lindner won all of his games and was well supported by Will Jones and Ed Palmer. Jones played particularly well against higher ranked Malcolm Dalley, only losing 4 points in a 4-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-7 score line.

Broadheath Belters showed why they won promotion from the 2nd division last season, when beating current 2nd division team Crackpots ‘B’ with ease. Brett Brining, John Stalker and Geoff Woodward continued their good form so far in the 1st division.

Two other teams moved into Round 2, beating under strength opponents. The youthful 2nd division MP Allsorts ‘B’ outfit of Rory Brittan, Stan Masson and Matt Hodges showed how much they have improved this season when disposing of 1st division strugglers MP Travellers. In an all 2nd division match MP Devils lost to Abbeydowne, but both Denis Chetwood and Liz Hallam took points off Len Hitchman.

The draw for the second round will take place in December following the results from the outstanding matches still to come in. This draw will be highly anticipated by the remaining teams and can be found at the leagues website www.malverntabletennis.com

Division Reports for week 9:

In division 1 of the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, Manor Park Cavaliers have gone temporarily top following their 9-1 win over Manor Park Pumas in a match that was closer than the scoreline suggests, with three sets going to five and six more going to four games. Joe Higgs and Mike Keeley both won three singles each and the doubles for Cavaliers. While Dave Hallam gained the consolation win with victory over Trevor Simmons 11-7 in the decider. Earlier the game of the night was between Jon Dyke and Simmons with Dyke leading two games to nil and 4-4 in the third, Simmons won the next seven points to take the third game and he won the fourth game comfortably 11-5. In the fifth game Simmons lead 10-5 before Dyke came back to level at 10-10, then he missed a straightforward backhand enabling Simmons to take the next point and finally the set 12-10 in the fifth.

CSSC Ramblers have moved upto fifth place following a straightforward 10-0 win over Crackpots'E'. Chris Hewitt, Alan Salisbury and Graham Thompson were all undefeated, with the only real resistance coming from Colin Dolding who took both Salisbury and Thompson to four games.

Ledbury Lions gained their second win of the season following a 6-4 win over Manor Park Travellers. Mark Stubbs and Gordon Stables both won twice and the doubles, with Mike Morgan picking up the other win for Lions. Martin Snee was in fine form to win his three singles for Travellers, with Ken Hipwell gaining a creditable win over Morgan 11-4, 11-8, 4-11, 7-11, 14-12.

In the second division Ripple and Poolbrook Rangers are fighting hard at the top of the table, only one point separates them and both teams won 3 points this week. A shock first defeat for MP Maulers as left them with a small gap they need to keep an eye on.

In Ripples’ game against Nomads Pete Nash won three, Roger Davies and Peter Quy won two singles, with Nash and Davies winning the doubles for Ripple. Adrian Fray was in good form for Nomads winning two in an evening where four sets went to five games.

Rangers’ Nick Haggar won all his sets including the doubles with Richard Cullis.  Richard and Greg Chludzinski, playing in his first match for Rangers, won two singles each. For OTT Dean Lewis won two.

Maulers had a tough evening against Crackpots ‘B’. Seven sets required extra games and four went to five.  Ted Cates and Stan Ginn won two for the visitors. Alan Forsdike won one and the doubles with Cates. Paul Lythgoe and Don James each won a singles for Maulers whilst Bill Smith won two.

Another long match was between Devils and Allsorts. 41 games were played, but it was not until the last set that the result of a win for Allsorts was achieved when Matt Hodges beat James Mulka by 14-12 in the fifth game after he had been 2 games to one down after three. Matt, Rory Brittain and Rob Harness all won two for Allsorts. Whilst for the Devils James Mulka won two, Denis Chetwood one and the two of them the doubles.

John Phillips won three for Dynamos, Ian Sage and Collette James won two each, while Bill Lucas was the only Abbeydowne player able to get on the score card. The doubles was won by Lucas and Roy Holland.

Matt White was by far the best player of the match for X – Police when they played MP Crackpots, winning all his singles. Steve Mulka and Alan Holmes took two each, with Mulka and White the doubles. Stephen Lindner won two and Will Jones one for Crackpots. The best set of the night was between Mulka and Lindner and ended in Crackpots favour, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 3-11, 10-12.

8th November 2009

Division Reports for week 8:

In division 1 of the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, Pterodactyl Old Boys have gone to the top following a 9-1 win over Crackpots 'E'. Crackpots got off to a flying start when Richard Maddrell beat Graham Collier in the first set of the evening, but after this Dave White and Ian Bell won all their singles as well as the doubles for the Old Boys. The closest match of the night was between two stalwarts of the league with Graham Collier beating Dave Steen 11-3, 13-11, 9-11, 13-11.

Manor Park Cavaliers' hopes of retaining the title are all but over after a second successive 6-4 defeat this time against CSSC Ramblers. Graham Thompson was the hero for Ramblers winning his three singles and he was supported by Chris Hewitt who won twice and Alan Salisbury once. For Cavaliers Joe Higgs won two and Mike Keeley one, with this pairing taking the doubles. Trevor Simmons was unlucky not to win any as he lost all his games in five.

Manor Park Pumas have been busy recently playing three games in a week and securing two wins and a draw. In their first game against Ledbury Lions they only had two players but still managed a 6-4 win, Dave Hallam secured three wins and Jon Dyke two and the doubles. Mike Morgan gained the consolation win for Lions.

In a rearranged game again against Ledbury Lions, Pumas had three players on the night, but could only manage a 5-5 draw. Nick Price and Jon Dyke both won twice for Pumas while for Lions Mark Stubbs won two and he teamed up with Gordon Stables to win the doubles.

Pumas gained their second win in a week by beating YMCA Vulcans 6-4, the trio of Jon Dyke, Nick Price and Dave Hallam all winning twice. For Vulcans Jim Ahern won his three singles and the doubles. With a bit more luck they could have got a draw as Beryl Shammon lost to Dyke 11-8 in the fifth and John Cathra lost to Price in the final set of the evening 11-9 in the decider.

The second division has three teams at the top vying for the number one spot and another three all close to each other just behind them.

The youngsters of Manor Park Allsorts played well to get three points from their meeting with Abbeydowne.  Stan Mason and Matt Hodges both won three singles and paired up for the doubles win by 14-12 in the fifth game.  Roy Holland, Bill Lucas and Len Hitchman had to be content with a set each.

In OTT’s match against Ripple Irmgard Tischner won a set against Peter Quy and was unlucky not to beat Pete Nash when she lost by 11-13 in the fourth game, but her efforts weren’t enough to score a point for her team. Ripple took the match with a four point win with Roger Davies and Pete Nash winning three each and the doubles. Taking Ripple into 2nd place in the division, with previous 2nd placed team MP Maulers not playing this week.

MP Devils’ player, James Mulka had a notable win over Geoff Davies of the Nomads. He also took a game from Dave Hayes, the division’s strongest player, and two games from Adrian Fray. Denis Chetwood, of the Devils, beat Adrian by 9-11 in the fifth game, which meant they got a point from the evening.

Stephen Lindner won two singles for the MP Crackpots and Will Jones won one, but a newcomer to the League, John Phillips, won all his singles in straight sets for the Dynamos. Collette James won two and the doubles with John to earn Dynamos three very welcome points.

Division Reports for week 7:
In division 1 of the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, Manor Park Express became the third side this season to occupy top spot following recent victories over Broadheath Belters and Crackpots 'E'. Against Belters they were made to work very hard for the three points with four of the sets requiring a fifth game including the final set of the evening when Pete Griffiths came from two games down to beat Brett Brining 11-6 in the decider to secure his three wins on the night and a 6-4 win for Express. Dave Woodyatt won two and Ray Page one for Express, while for Belters John Stalker won twice and he teamed up with Brinning to win the doubles. On paper Express’s 10-0 win over Crackpots'E' looked straightforward, but in the first set of the evening Dave Steen was two games and 10-9 up in the third against Dave Woodyatt before Woodyatt came back to win that game 12-10 and then took the next two comfortably. Mark Jones and Ray Page also won their three singles, but James Palmer and his son Ed who was playing up from division two played very well and were unlucky in some close scoring games, as a result the match did not finish until 10.45pm.

In second place are Ledbury Collection who defeated Crackpots'E' 9-1 to collect their fourth maximum of the season. Nigel Foreshew and Harry Jutle won their three singles for Collection as well as the doubles while Bob Trimble won twice in his first outing of the season. Crackpots consolation came from Richard Maddrell who beat Trimble 16-14 in the fifth.

Pterodactyl Old Boys beat last seasons champions Manor Park Cavaliers 6-4 thanks to Dave White and Wayne Chopping who on the night were too strong for Cavaliers as they both won all their singles.

Broadheath Belters beat Crackpots'E' 6-4, with Brett Brinning unbeaten on the night teaming up with John Stalker who won twice to take the doubles. For Crackpots Richard Maddrell won twice, with Dave Steen and James Palmer each winning one.

In division 2 Ripple players, Roger Davies and Pete Nash each won two singles and the doubles, with Peter Quy winning two singles. Ed Palmer was the only player to win a set for MP Crackpots, by 9-11 in the fourth game. Palmer also played well against Peter Quy, only narrowly losing by 11-9 in the fifth game against Pete Nash.

Denis Chetwood managed to prevent the whitewash for MP Devils against OTT. Unfortunately Liz Hallam, having been two games to one up after three games, lost the next two by 10-12 against Alan Spink, meaning Devils didn’t manage to gain a point. Irmgard Tischner and Dean Lewis both won all their singles and the doubles for OTT.

A very close match between Dynamos and X – Police ended as a draw after each set had gone first to one team then the other. Charlie Burford won all his singles for Dynamos, with Collette James and Ian Sage each winning one. Matt White and Malcolm Dalley each won two singles and the doubles for X – Police.

Crackpots ‘B’s match with Poolbrook Rangers appears from the score line to have been an easy match, but out of the 32 games played 13 were won by just two or three points. Alan Forsdike managed to save the whitewash for the ‘B’ team and came close to getting a point for them when he lost to Nick Haggar in a cracking set ending with the score of 6-11, 13-15, 19-21 to Hagger.

Bill Lucas was the only winning player for Abbeydowne against Nomads, but he also teamed up with Roy Holland in a doubles win. Adrian Fray won three, with Tony Hughes and Goeff Davies each winning two sets for Nomads. During the evening two sets went to four games and another three to five.

Maulers were far too strong for Allsorts ‘B’, with Bill Smith, Ray Davies and Kevin Howard being the successful trio.

25th October 2009

Division Reports for week 6:

In division 1 of the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, Manor Park Cavaliers have replaced Ledbury Collection at the top of the table following their 8-2 win over their rivals. Joe Higgs and Trevor Simmons were both undefeated for Cavaliers and Collection's point came courtesy of wins for both Harry Jutle and Ann Barnes over Mike Keeley.

Moving into third place and with a game in hand are Pterodactyl Old Boys who scored maximum points after a 9-1 win over YMCA Vulcans. Dave White and Wayne Chopping won their three singles and the doubles while for Vulcans, Jim Ahern beat Graham Collier in straight games.

In the derby game at the bottom of the table Pumas overcame Travellers 7-3 but the game could have gone either way as seven of the sets required a fifth game with Pumas winning six of them. Dave Hallam won his three singles for Pumas, two of them 11-8 in the fifth and the other slightly closer at 11-9 in the fifth! He was supported by Nick Price who won twice, while Travellers picked up their first point of the season thanks mainly to Stewart Moss who won two singles.

In division 2 Stan Mason played well in both Allsorts ‘B’ matches against Poolbrook Rangers and Crackpots ‘B’. In the Rangers match he saved the whitewash by beating Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart 11-7 in the fifth game and he won 2 singles against Crackpots. In the Crackpots match Bill Nelson was adding strength to the Allsorts team with two wins and Matt Hodges did the same. Eight of the ten sets went to extra games, with four of them to five games. Ted Cates won two singles and Alan Forsdike one for Crackpots ‘B’ and together they won the doubles. During what must have been a very long evening as 13 games were won by just 2 points.

X – Police won 10 sets in their match with the Devils. Matt White, Malcolm Dalley and Alan Holmes were the successful trio. Liz Hallam took one game off Matt and two off Malcolm but was unable to save the whitewash for the Devils.

When X - Police played Ripple Matt White took a game from Roger Davies and then beat Peter Quy, 11-8 in their fourth game. Although the score looked any easy win for Ripple many of the games were close and half the sets required extra games.

Another long evening was the match between two Manor Park teams - the Crackpots and the Devils. Four sets went to a fourth game and two to five, with 17 games being won by only two or three points. Liz Hallam won one and Denis Chetwood two for the Devils, while Stephen Lindner won all his singles and the doubles with Will Jones. Dina Murdie won two singles for the Crackpots.

Abbeydowne won their first match of the season against OTT. Roy Holland and Bill Lucas won two sets each and the doubles, whilst Peter Dennis won one. For OTT Dean Lewis won three and Alan Spink one set.

18th October 2009

Division Reports for week 5:

In division 1 of the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, Ledbury Collection consolidated their position at the top of the table with a 7-3 win over YMCA Vulcans. However, it was the first time this season that they didn't score maximum points as Jim Ahern won twice for Vulcans, including a very creditable 8-11, 11-8, 13-11, 7-11 ,11-7 win over Nigel Foreshew and John Cawthra defeated Ann Barnes 7-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-6. In his first outing of the season Mike Wheatley also won twice for Collection.

Manor Park Express threw away a 4-1 lead against fellow title contenders Cavaliers and in the end had to settle for a 5-5 draw which was attained in the final game of the evening when Mark Jones beat Trevor Simmons. Earlier Pete Griffiths won twice for Express as did Joe Higgs for Cavaliers.

CSSC Ramblers gained their first win of the season and gained maximum points with a 9-1 win over Manor Park Travellers. Alan Salisbury and Graham Thompson each won their three singles and the doubles, while for Travellers Stewart Moss gained their consolation set with a win over Dave Hayes.

In division 2 James Mulka saved the whitewash for Devils when they played the Dynamos. In spite of losing 9-1, 9 of the games played were only won by 2 points and another five by three points. Charlie Burford and Collette James both won 3 singles and Ian Sage two, with Ian and Collette teaming up to win the doubles.

OTT’s Dean Lewis played very well to win all his singles against MP Crackpots, but Will Jones, Stephen Lindner and Ed Palmer won two singles each, with Will and Stephen winning the doubles.

Maulers were having an easy evening until Don James met Bill Lucas of Abbeydowne in the final set and lost 7-11 in the fifth game.

Ted Cates and Stan Ginn both won two sets for Crackpots ‘B’ while Tony Hughes won three, with Geoff Davies and Adrian Fray each winning one for Nomads.  Tony and Adrian took the doubles, but it was an evening where the scores went from side to side, with five sets going to four games and two sets to five games. It was Tony’s victory over Ted in the last set of the night that decided the result.

Pete Nash and Brian Gregory each won three singles for Ripple. Pete and Roger Davies also won the doubles, with Mark Davies picking up one singles to give Ripple a three point win. For Dynamos Charlie Burford and Ian Sage each won a set to earn them a point from the match.

Division Reports for weeks 3 and 4:

Week 3

The new season for Malvern Table Tennis League has started under new sponsorship.  The League was extremely grateful for the years that Brewin Dolphin supported them and now welcome, with gratitude, Paperstation, as their new sponsors.

With 24 teams entered, the committee decided that instead of three divisions there should now be two divisions of 12 teams but sadly one team decided that they could not fulfil their fixtures satisfactorily and pulled out of the first division before the season started.

Notably among these early results is that in spite of a wider range of players’ standards, no matches ended in whitewashes and many of the less experienced sides did extremely well against better opposition.

In Division 2, the most notable player has been Matthew White for X - Police.  He beat two Poolbrook Rangers players and another two when playing Crackpots ‘B’. Then when his team was nine sets down against Maulers, he beat Ray Miles in four sets to save the whitewash.

Dave Hayes and Peter Quy both have six out of six wins and Richard Cullis has only lost one out of nine.  Stan Ginn, Ted Cates, Ray Davies, Dean Lewis and Bill Smith each have five out of six wins.

Week 4

The Malvern Table Tennis League sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, is now into it’s 4th week and would like remind people of the new sponsorship with Paperstation Ltd. The League was extremely grateful for the years that Brewin Dolphin previously supported them.

In Division One, Ledbury Collection are the early season leaders with maximum points from their opening three matches, their latest result being a 9-1 win over Manor Park Pumas.

Nigel Foreshew and Harry Jutle won their three singles comfortably but they were beaten in five games by Jon Dyke and Dave Hallam in the doubles 11-8, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 5-11. Earlier both Jon and Dave had taken Ann Barnes to five games before losing 6 and 6 respectively.

Previous leaders Manor Park Cavaliers are now in second place following a hard fought 8-2 win over previously undefeated Broadheath Belters.

Joe Higgs was once again unbeaten in both singles and doubles while for Broadheath Brett Brining and Geoff Woodward were both involved in five setters against both Trevor Simmons and Mike Keeley with Brett beating Trevor 11-6 in the decider and Geoff beating Mike 11-7 in the fifth.

In their previous match Broadheath beat YMCA Vulcans 8-2, Brett Brinning was undefeated while for Vulcans Jin Ahern won twice including a 11-3, 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 12-10 win over John Stalker.

Manor Park Express hold down third place following victories over Ledbury Lions 7-3 and YMCA Vulcans 9-1.

Against Lions Dave Woodyatt was unbeaten on the night and he teamed up with Pete Griffiths to win the doubles.

For Lions Mike Morgan beat Ray Page and Steve Meredith won two beating Griffiths 12-10 in the fifth and narrowly losing to Woodyatt 13-11 in the decider.

In the match against Vulcans Mark Jones won his three singles in straight games, with Vulcans consolation coming from Jim Ahern who beat Ray Page 12-10, 12-10, 11-8. Dave Woodyatt was also unbeaten on the night but he was made to work hard in beating John Cawthra 11-9, 13-11, 9-11, 12-10.

Manor Park Travellers are finding life tough in division one with no points from four matches, however they did register their first set of the season when Martin Snee beat Ian Bell 11-7, 11-8, 2-11, 11-5 in the final game of the evening against Pterodactyl Old Boys to save the whitewash.

The win takes Old Boys up to fifth in the table and this season looks set to be one of the closest for many years with at least five teams capable of finishing in the top spot.

In Division 2 Manor Park Crackpots, Stephen Lindner won two sets and Ed Palmer one. Whilst for Manor Park Maulers Kevin Howard won three and was supported by Don James with two and Ray Davies one.

Nomads lost to Rangers in a very close match.  Only one set was won in straight games, seven went to four games and two to five.  Fourteen games were won by just 2 points.  The outstanding player of the evening was Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart who won all his singles.  He managed to take Dave Hayes 100% record off him by winning the fifth game 14-12.  Dave won his other two singles and the doubles with Tony Hughes. Rangers had two wins each from Nick Haggar and Richard Cullis.

Dean Lewis of the OTT team saved them from a whitewash, but Steve Mulka and Matt White each won three for X – Police. Alan Holmes won two and teamed up with Steve in successful doubles win.

Bill Lucas won three singles and paired with Roy Holland to win the doubles for Abbeydowne,  the Crackpots ‘B’ team of Tim Snee, Stan Ginn and Alan Forsdike each won two.
