Division Reports for week 16 and second round Handicap results:

In the Handicap competition of the Paperstation Malvern table tennis league the main competition saw Pterodactyl Old Boys beat Manor Park Pumas by 34.5pts. Graham Collier filled the void left by Wayne Chopping for Old Boys, but could not quite recover the handicap despite good wins against Dave Hallam and John Hunt. Ian Bell also enjoyed a 3 sets to 1 victory over Jon Dyke, but ultimately Dave Hallam’s 4 set victory over Bell and Hunt’s achievement in sharing the 4 sets proved enough for Pumas to be victorious. Dave White only lost 2 sets in the match to Hallam and Jon Dyke, but had to share the 4 sets with Collier against Hunt and Hallam in the doubles.

A 100% winning record for Trevor Simmons and an 11-1 record for Mike Keeley was not quite enough to deliver success for Manor Park Cavaliers against CSSC Nomads. Keeley’s solitary set loss was against Dave Hayes who also shared 4 sets with Matt Hodges. Ultimately this success coupled with some narrow losses for Tony Hughes and Adrian Fray was enough to deliver victory for the 2nd division side by 27.5 points

The absence of the experienced Ted Cates proved too much for Crackpots ‘B’ to overcome the youngsters from Malvern Tornados for whom Tom James won 11 of the 12 sets he played, ably supported by Andy Banks and Chris Burrows.

In the secondary competition Manor Park Devils beat Poolbrook Rangers after Nick Haggar suffered an early knee injury against Paul Lythgoe and was unable to complete the match, handing Devils a comfortable victory. Lythgoe and Liz Hallam enjoyed a creditable 4 set victory against Richard Cullis and Robert Weston although Cullis only lost 1 set against Lythgoe of the 12 sets he played on the night.

First division leaders Broadheath Belters proved too strong for the 2nd division opponents, Dukes Way Dynamos, although Charlie Burford took a creditable 11-9 set against Sasha Grokhotov as did John Phillips 11-7.  Philips also took an 11-9 set against Brett Brining. However, Malvern League Champion, Michael Siket’s form proved to be overpowering on the night dropping only 42 points in the 16 sets he played including the doubles with Grokhotov against Philips and Burford.

Results in for division one saw Broadheath Belters remain on course for the title following another emphatic win, this time against Ledbury Lions, 9-1. The usual suspects Michael Siket and Sasha Grokhotov both won their three singles, while Brett Brining won twice. Together Siket and Brining took the doubles. For Lions the whitewash was saved by Chris Sabourin who beat Brining in four games while Jim Ahern also took a game off Brining. Steve Meredith was unlucky not to win a game as he went down 17-15 to Grokhotov and 18-16 against and Brining.

Pterodactyl Old Boys stayed in touch with the leaders following a hard fought 8-2 win over Crackpots 'E' where three sets went to five games. Dave White won his three singles while Wayne Chopping and Graham Collier both won twice, with White and Chopping also taking the doubles. For Crackpots Colin Dolding won twice, beating Collier 11-9 in the fifth and following this up with an even better win against Chopping in the final set of the evening 11-5, 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9 to end Chopping 's unbeaten run for the season. Richard Maddrell also played well for Crackpots losing narrowly to White in five games 14-12, 4-11, 16-14, 7-11, 7-11.

Ledbury Collection stayed in third place after a 6-4 win over Manor Park Cavaliers in a match where three sets went the full distance. For Collection Harry Jutle, Ady Marshall and Ann Barnes all won twice. Whilst for Cavaliers Trevor Simmons won twice, Mike Keeley once and Simmons playing with Matt Hodges took the doubles.

Division Reports for week 16:

In Division 2 of the Malvern Paperstation table tennis league the Scuttling Gang’s match with Manor Park Crackpots ended in a win for them by 9 sets to 1, but eight sets went to four games and one of them to five. Many of the games were very close, but Bill Smith’s and Ed Palmer’s set was the toughest with Bill eventually winning by 10-12, 11-5, 14-12, 19-17. Stephen Lindner managed to save the whitewash for Crackpots, but Ray Davies and Chris Field won all their sets and the doubles for the Scuttling Gang. This win has jumped them two places up to the top of the table, but there are still only two points between the top three teams.

Paul Lythgoe won three and James Mulka two singles for Manor Park Devils. For X-Police James Palmer won two, Alan Preece and Alan Holmes won one each and Palmer and Preece won the doubles. Both teams were happy to settle for a hard fought draw.

Ripple made fairly light work of winning against Crackpots ‘B’ with just four sets going to four games. Stan Ginn was the only winner for the ‘B’ team, with Peter Quy and Peter Nash winning three each for Ripple. Roger Davies also took one for Ripple with Davies and Nash taking the doubles.

Division Reports for week 15:

Broadheath Belters have gone two points clear at the top in division one of the Paperstation Malvern table tennis league following victories over CSSC Ramblers and Manor Park Travellers. Against Ramblers Michael Siket and Sasha Grokhotov both won their three singles while Brett Brining won twice in their 8-2 win. Ramblers point came courtesy of a singles win for Chris Hewitt while he also teamed up with Graham Thompson to win the doubles. Thompson was also very unlucky not to end Grokhotov 's unbeaten run for the season as he lost in five very close games, 13-11, 9-11, 8-11, 14-12, 11-13. Against Travellers Siket, Grokhotov and Brining all won three singles each in their 9-1 victory. Travellers saved the whitewash by beating Siket and Grokhotov in the doubles, 11-7, 11-9, 11-2 with their winning pair being Martin Snee and Stewart Moss.

Pterodactyl Old Boys are in second place in the table after beating Manor Park Pumas 8-2. Wayne Chopping and Dave White both won their three singles and the doubles, while Ian Bell, who was making his first appearance of the season won their other set against John Hunt. Jon Dyke and Dave Hallam both won a set apiece for Pumas. Pumas were on form in their next match as they beat Crackpots 'E' 9-1. Hallam and Hunt both won three singles each while Dyke won twice. Also in the doubles Hallam and Dyke were the victors. Crackpots consolation win came from Dave Steen who beat Dyke 11-8, 6-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8.

In the match between Cavaliers and Express four sets went to five games and no player won their three singles as the match ended in a 5-5 draw. Mike Keeley and Trevor Simmons both won twice,  with Matt Hodges taking one for Cavaliers. While for Express Pete Griffiths won twice, Dave Woodyatt and Ray Page won one each while Griffiths and Woodyatt won the doubles in five games.

Only two points separate the top three teams in the second division. This week Dynamos played X–Police and thanks to John Philips winning all his sets and the doubles, whilst being backed up by one win each from Collette James and Charlie Burford, they took three points to put them at the top of the table. James Palmer and Steve Mulka each won two for X–Police.

Poolbrook Rangers cancelled their match because they could not raise a team so they are now in second place behind Dynamos. Meanwhile The Scuttling Gang played the Devils and gained a three point win. Paul Lythgoe won two singles to give Devils a point, but Ray Davies was in top form and took three and the doubles with Don James. James and Bill Smith had two wins each for the Scuttling Gang.

All the singles sets were won in straight games when Crackpots ‘B’ played Malvern Tornados. Bill Nelson and Tom James took the first two sets for Tornados, but then their luck ran out except for the doubles which James partnered Andy Banks to come back from two sets down to win by 11-6, 11-9, 1-13, 6-11, 5-11. Stan Ginn had three wins, with Ted Cates and Alan Forsdike taking two each for Crackpots.

Dave Hayes won all his singles and the doubles with Adrian Fray for CSSC Nomads and Adrian Fray won a set to share the points with Ripple. Pete Nash and Roger Davies each won two, with Mark Davies taking one for Ripple. The doubles was extremely close with Nomads eventually winning by 13-15, 8-11, 11-6, 13-11, 16-14.

Division Reports for week 14:

In division one of the Paperstation Malvern table tennis league Ledbury Collection stayed in contention for the title following an 8-2 win over Manor Park Travellers. Ann Barnes was in fine form for Collection winning her three singles while good support came from the father and son combination of Bob and Ady Marshall who both won two apiece as well as the doubles. For Travellers their point came courtesy of Martin Snee and Toby Wren who both won once.

Manor Park Express moved up one place to fifth following a 6-4 win over Ledbury Lions. Pete Griffiths and Dave Woodyatt both won their three singles for Express while for Lions Jim Ahern, Steve Meredith and Richard Smith all won once, with Ahern and Meredith also taking the doubles.

The match between Manor Park Cavaliers and Crackpots 'E' ended up as a 5-4 win for Cavaliers as both sides could only field two players on the night , which meant that Cavaliers ended up with two points for the win as they only won five sets. Mike Keeley and Matt Hodges both won one set each for Cavaliers as did Colin Dolding and Dave Steen for Crackpots. The deciding set on the night was the doubles, which the Cavaliers pair won in five games; 1-11, 11-6, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7. The set of the night was between Hodges and Dolding in which the Cavaliers youngster came out on top thanks to some fine consistent forehand hitting 11-5, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9.

In division two Dukes Way Dynamos only managed to pick up one point this week whereas Poolbrook Rangers took three points from CSSC Nomads, so they take the lead in the second division. The Scuttling Gang with two matches in hand can still over take them both.

Roy Holland won a singles set for Abbeydowne against Crackpots ‘B’, who were a man short, so conceded a point in the match. Ted Cates won three singles, Alan Forsdike two and together they won the doubles, but more than half the sets went to four games and two of them to five.

CSSC Nomads were also a player short against Poolbrook Rangers, but Dave Hayes won all his games including the doubles with Adrian Fray. Nick Haggar, Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart and Richard Cullis all won one for Rangers.

Tom James, for Tornados, beat two of the Ripple team, both of them in four games and only lost to Pete Nash by 8-11 in the fifth game. Pete Nash ended up with three wins, with Peter Quy and Paul Davies both winning two. The match was not quite as easy as the score suggests as three sets went to five games, another three to four and ten games went beyond 9 all.

Manor Park Crackpots had a very long evening with X–Police when eight extra games had to be played and fifteen of them were won by just two points. The all important doubles was won by MP Crackpots players, Stephen Lindner and Ed Palmer playing against Alan Holmes and James Palmer by 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10. Lindner won all his singles, with Will Jones and taking Ed Palmer one each. Malcolm Dalley and James Palmer both won two for X–Police.

James Mulka and Paul Lythgoe both won all their singles for Devils, but were unable to beat Crackpots ‘B’s veteran pairing of Ted Cates and Alan Forsdike in the doubles. On the night only two sets were won in straight games.

Harry Jutle was Collection's best player beating Thompson 11-7 in the fifth and also losing narrowly to Salisbury 12-10 in the fifth.

Ledbury Lions had a hard fought win over Crackpots 'E' with six sets going to five games, Lions managed to win four of them to record a 7-3 victory. Steve Meredith won his three singles for Lions with good support coming from Jim Ahern and Richard Smith who both won twice. For Crackpots Colin Doldling and Dave Steen both won one apiece and together they won the doubles against Ahern and Meredith 11-9, 9-11, 13-11, 9-11, 13-11.

In Division 2 Poolbrook Rangers and Dukes Way Dynamos have started the New Year level on points at the top of the table, but Rangers have a much better record of 81 games won from their 11 matches, whereas Dynamos have won 67 games. Close behind them are the Scuttling Gang, who have two matches in hand and have won 71 games.

In this week’s matches Dave Hayes won two singles for CSSC Nomads and was supported with a win each from Tony Hughes and Adrian Fray. If the close fought doubles had gone their way they would have secured a draw. Chris Field won three, Lyn Davies two and together they won the doubles for the Scuttling Gang.

John Philips won three singles, Charlie Burford and Dave Bradley two each for Dynamos against CSSC Nomads, with Philips and Bradley also taking the doubles. Nomads were saved from the whitewash by Dave Hayes who won two.

However, there were again creditable performances by the lower division team in particular John Phillips who took sets off both Wayne Chopping 11-9 and Graham Collier 12-10. Norman Merchant enjoyed a 100% set victory record for the Old Boys.

In the final match of the round Manor Park Cavaliers overcame The Scuttling Gang by 419 to 380.5 overcoming a handicap of 125.5 points. For Travellers Martin Snee continued his good form for the season winning twice, while Toby Wren played well to take Merchant to five games.

In division 2 Ray Davies, Bill Smith and Don James all were unbeaten for The Scuttling Gang in their match against Abbeydowne. The only player for Abbeydowne to win a game was Bill Lucas who managed to take the last set of the night to four games.

Ted Cates and Alan Forsdike each won a singles set and the doubles together for Crackpots ‘B’, but Dave Hayes had three straight game wins, with Adrian Fray and Tony Hughes taking two each for CSSC Nomads.

The Ripple trio of Roger Davies, Peter Quy and Pete Nash were all in fine form against Manor Park Crackpots and sent the visitors home without a point although Will Jones and Ed Palmer both managed to take a set to a fifth game while Dina Murdie only lost a set by 9-11 in the fourth game.

Five sets required extra games when Malvern Tornados played Dukes Way Dynamos. The longest set of the evening was between Bill Nelson and Collette James, which Nelson won by 11-3, 7-11, 9-11, 2-10, 11-6. Tom James’ contest with his mother was a close battle with Tom winning 10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5. Tom also played well against John Philips, but lost in the fourth game. Philips ended with three wins and the doubles, which he won with Charlie Burford, whilst for Tornados Tom ended with two wins and Nelson took one.

Manor Park Devils very nearly got three points from their encounter with Dynamos and certainly deserved a draw. James Mulka played extremely well to beat both Collette James and John Philips, one of the divisions’ top players, in straight games, while Liz Hallam was two sets to love up before losing the fifth game by 11-9 against James. The doubles was another set that needed five games eventually being won by John Philips and Dave Bradley, who also both won two for Dynamos. For Devils Paul Lythgoe and Mulka won two each.

The league would further wish to notify league players that Dukes Way Dynamos have changed both playing venue and day. They now play out of the Foley Institute, Poolbrook on Thursday nights.
