Final League Report:

The final matches have now been completed in the Malvern Table Tennis league as sponsored by PaperStation Ltd. Sadly division 2 has ended up with four un-played matches. The two teams who came down into the division will be returning to the first division again as YMCA Vulcans finished at the top and Manor Park Travellers in second place.

In Manor Park Crackpots match against Abbeydowne, Stephen Lindner won three sets and the doubles with Ed Palmer. Palmer won two singles and Dina Murdie had her first win of the season when she beat Peter Denniss 17-15 in the fourth game. Bill Lucas won two and Len Hitchman one for Abbeydowne.

Abbeydowne’s other match in the final weeks ended up as a draw against Devils, with Bill Lucas and Roy Holland taking two sets each and together they won the doubles. James Mulka won three, with Liz Hallam and Denis Chetwood taking one each for Devils.

Six sets needed extra games and four went to five when Devils played Dynamos. James Mulka won two singles and the doubles, with Liz Hallam and Denis Chetwood winning one each. Charlie Burford, Ian Sage and Alison Sage all won two each for Dynamos.

The last match of the season was between the two Crackpots teams and as in the first half of the season, it ended up as a draw. Stephen Lindner won all his singles and Ed Palmer two. Palmer managed to beat Ted Cates by 11-9 and Alan Forsdike by 12-10 respectively in the fifth game of the set. Stan Ginn won two, with Forsdike and Cates each winning one singles. In an exciting doubles set Cates and Forsdike teamed up for a close win by 13-15 in the fifth game.

Handicap finals report:

This year’s winners of the Malvern Table Tennis League Handicap Competition are YMCA Vulcans. In the final Vulcans destroyed Broadheath Belters by the comfortable margin of 35 points. Vulcans came into the final with the confidence of a team at the top of Division 2 and their players showed their worth against a team a division above them. In a stirring performance Beryl Shammon took a point off John Stalker 12-10, 11-8, 14-12, 5-11. Lukassz Galkiewicz pushed Brett Brining all the way in a score-line of 5-11, 12-10, 9-11, 9-11. Then in the doubles Galkiewicz and John Cawthra pulled out all the stops before going down to Brining and Michael Siket 7-11, 8-11, 12-14, 7-11. By the end of the evening, with the help of a handicap of 221 points, Vulcans had gained a deserved victory.

In the Secondary Competition Division 1 winners Manor Park Cavaliers added another trophy to their collection when beating X Police by a mere 8 points. For much of the evening it looked as though Joe Higgs, Jack Higgs and Trevor Simmons were taking Cavaliers to a comfortable victory, but Toby Wren took a game off Simmons and then Matt White took the penultimate game off Jack 12-10 to leave the match very much in the balance. At 4-4 in the last game of the evening the tie was up for grabs, but Jack reeled off the last 7 points to lead his side to a tense victory in a match enjoyed by all present.

The trophies will be presented at Malvern Rugby Club on Friday 20th May. All are welcome to attend, tickets can be obtained by contacting Richard Cullis on 01905 426442.

Division Report for week 24:

In division one of the Paperstation Malvern table tennis league Manor Park Cavaliers have regained the title following a hard fought 6-4 win over one of their nearest challengers Broadheath Belters. On the night Jack Higgs and Mike Keeley both won twice, while Joe Higgs won once and together the Higgs brothers took the all important doubles. For Belters the ever reliable Michael Siket won his three singles with Brett Brining taking their other set. Two of the sets required five games and in one of those Keeley came from 5-2 down in the 5th set to beat Brining 9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 2-11, 11-6, while in the final set of the evening Jack Higgs had an almighty struggle against John Stalker before finally winning the set and the match for Cavaliers, 9-11,11-8,7-11,11-7,12-10.

Pterodactyl Old Boys are confirmed as runners up in the division following Belters defeat and their subsequent 10-0 victory over The Scuttling Gang. The winning trio were Wayne Chopping, Dave White and Ian Bell who all won their singles, while White and Bell also took the doubles. For the Scuttlers Don James was the only player to win a game as he lost to White 6-11, 11-8, 1-11, 3-11.

Crackpots 'E' and Manor Park Pumas fought out a 5-5 draw in a match where Crackpots came from 4-0 down and 5-3 down to claim a share of the spoils. For Crackpots Colin Dolding and Dave Steen both won twice, also taking the doubles together. For Pumas Jon Dyke and John Hunt gained two wins apiece, with Dave Hallam winning their other set. The only set that went to five was in the doubles where Dolding and Steen defeated Dyke and Hallam 15-13, 11-6, 6-11, 8-11, 11-4.

In division 2 Manor Park Crackpots managed to earn themselves a point from their match with division 2 champions YMCA Vulcans, in spite of having only two players. Vulcans have been confirmed as champions despite of a loss this week and will be playing in division one next season. Ed Palmer and Will Jones each won a set, but Beryl Shammon and Dave Watton each won two and the doubles for Vulcans. In their other match, against X – Police, Vulcans were back to full strength with John Cawthra playing with Shammon and Watton, but Toby Wren won three and Matt White two singles and they teamed up for a doubles win to give Police a 6 – 4 win.

Crackpots ‘B’ ended up all square against Dynamos with Ted Cates winning two, whilst Alan Forsdike and Stan Ginn each won one. Cates and Forsdike combined well yet again to take the doubles. Charlie Burford won three and Alison Sage two for Dynamos. Against Manor Park Travellers, who have now completed their matches and have finished in second place, Stan Ginn and Ted Cates won a singles each for Crackpots ‘B’, but Ken Hipwell and Martin Snee each won three and the doubles for Travellers.

Allsorts complete their season with an 8-2 win over Ripple. Matt Hodges and Stan Mason won three sets each, Rory Brittain took one, whilst Brittain and Mason won the doubles for Allsorts. For Ripple Peter Quy and Mark Davies each took a set.

Handicap Semi Finals Report:

The final of the Malvern Table Tennis League Handicap Competition will be between YMCA Vulcans and Broadheath Belters. In the quarter-final Vulcans had beaten Pterodactyl Old Boys by half a point and once again were involved in a hard fought encounter with Travellers. Their winning margin of 11 points was thanks to a good team effort led by Lucasc Galkiewicz who won all his games comfortably. Both Beryl Shammon and John Cawthra were on top of their games and showed why Vulcans are at the top of Division 2.

Broadheath Belters moved forward into the final despite having to concede 310 points to Manor Park Crackpots. In a ruthless performance Belters did not give their opponents a chance and won by 23 points. Once again Brett Brining, Michael Siket and John Stalker conceded very few points.

Division 1 leaders Manor Park Cavaliers qualified for the Secondary Handicap Final when beating Pumas by 65 points. The tie could have gone either way until the doubles when Joe and Jack Higgs took Dave Hallam and Jon Dyke apart in a score-line of 11-1, 11-2, 11-5, 11-1.

In the other semi-final between Ripple and X Police the doubles match was once again crucial. In this tie Matt White and Toby Wren beat Peter Quy and Pete Nash 11-3, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7 to put the match firmly under control of the X Police. Earlier in the evening Ripple’s Brian Gregory beat Matt White 6-11, 13-11, 11-2, 11-8 and both Pete Nash and Peter Quy took points off Malcolm Dalley. These were isolated successes and X Police ran out comfortable winners by 59 points.

Division Report for week 23:

In division one Pterodactyl Old Boys moved up to second place in the table following a 9-1 win over Manor Park Pumas. The usual suspects Wayne Chopping and Dave White both won their three singles sets, while Graham Collier won twice. For Pumas their consolation win came from Jon Dyke who beat Collier while he also took a game off Chopping. The set of the night was in the doubles where Chopping and Collier defeated Dyke and Dave Hallam in five games 10-12, 11-7, 12-10, 5-11, 11-4.

Poolbrook Rangers became the first side in the division to fulfil all their league fixtures by playing their last three matches in the space of eight days. Their first match of the set was a 7-3 defeat against Crackpots 'E' where they found Colin Dolding in fine form as he won this three singles. He was ably supported by Dave Steen who won twice and James Palmer who won one. For Rangers Richard Cullis, Nick Haggar and Alisdair Maxwell-Stewart all won once, while in the doubles Dolding and Palmer were victorious for Crackpots as they beat Haggar and Maxwell-Stewart 7-11, 11-3, 11-0, 4-11, 11-9. In their next match they were unable to gain a point as they were beaten 9-1 by Manor Park Express. Ray Page and Pete Griffiths each won their three singles sets in straight games, while Dave Woodyatt won twice, with Woodyatt and Page also taking the doubles. For Rangers Haggar played well, taking a game off both Griffiths and Woodyatt, while Cullis saved the whitewash in the final set of the evening with victory over Woodyatt by the score-line of 5-11, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4. In possibly Rangers' last division one match for at least a season they signed off with a creditable 5-5 draw against two man CSSC Ramblers, four of the seven sets went to five games with one more going to four. Graham Thompson won his three singles for Ramblers and he was backed up by Ian Backhurst who won twice. For Rangers Cullis defeated Backhurst 11-9 in the fifth and he then teamed up with Haggar to win a close doubles 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 4-11, 11-9. The result of this match could have gone either way as Maxwell-Stewart and Haggar both lost to Backhurst 8-11 and 9-11 in the fifth game respectively, so a draw was probably the right result.

Division Report for week 22:

A significant fortnight in the 2nd division of the Malvern table tennis league saw YMCA Vulcans loosing their first match of the season when they were beaten by the most improved team of players in the League, Manor Park Allsorts. Stan Mason and Matt Hodges both won their three singles sets for Allsorts, whilst Dave Watton, Beryl Shammon and John Cawthra each won one for Vulcans. I a tough battle for Vulcans Watton & Cawthra also took the doubles. Half of the sets went to four games and one of them to five. Allsorts also took three points from their match with Abbeydowne with Hodges and Mason again winning all their singles and Rory Brittain winning one. Bill Lucas and Roy Holland each won one and together took the doubles for Abbeydowne.

Dukes Way Dynamos’ match with CSSC Nomads could have been won by either team. Only two sets were won in straight games, five went to four games and another three went to five. Fourteen of the 41 games played were won by just two points and another eight by three points. For Dynamos the Sage family were out in full force, with Ian winning two sets and his daughter, Alison, one. Dave Hayes was the chief reason for Nomads win, as he won three singles and the doubles with Tony Hughes. Hughes won two singles sets and Adrian Fray one.

The Sage family were again in action against Manor Park Travellers. This time five sets needed extra games, but Dynamos were unlucky not to win even a consolation set. Ken Hipwell, Martin Snee and Stewart Moss were the successful trio for Travellers.

CSSC Nomads were only able to field two players against X – Police, but both of them, Adrian Fray and Tony Hughes won two sets. Steve Mulka won two sets for X – Police and Malcolm Dalley partnered him in winning the doubles.

Ted Cates won three sets, Stan Ginn two and Alan Forsdike one for Crackpots ‘B’, with Cates and Forsdike winning the doubles, but Liz Hallam, Dennis Chetwood and James Mulka all went home with a win each for Devils.

Bill Lucas won two sets and Len Hitchman one for Abbeydowne against Manor Park Crackpots. Stephen Lindner won his three singles and teamed up with Ed Palmer to take the doubles. Ed won two singles and Will Jones one.

In division one Broadheath Belters and Pterodactyl Old Boys played out a 5-5 draw in a match where only one set required four games. Malvern champion Michael Siket was again in impressive form, winning his three singles sets in straight games, while Brett Brining and John Stalker chipped in with a win apiece. For Old Boys Wayne Chopping and Dave White both won twice and teamed up to win the doubles against Siket and Brining in comprehensive fashion 11-6, 11-5, 11-3.

In Old Boys next match they beat Manor Park Pumas 9-1, but the match was closer than the score-line suggests with three sets going to five games. Wayne Chopping and Dave White both won their three singles sets and the doubles, while Graham Collier also won twice. Jon Dyke was in fine form for Pumas as he gained their consolation win, while also taking a game off White and giving Chopping an almighty scare before going down 8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 4-11, 9-11. Dave Hallam was also unlucky not to gain a point for Pumas as he had five match points against Collier before losing 11-5, 6-11, 11-9, 4-11, 14-16, while John Hunt also lost to Collier in five.

Manor Park Pumas also lost 9-1 against Broadheath Belters in a match where they could only field two players, Michael Siket and Brett Brining won their two singles and the doubles while John Stalker won their other set. Jon Dyke saved the whitewash beating Stalker in straight games 11-7, 11-3, 11-7.

CSSC Ramblers defeated Ledbury Collection 8-2 with three sets going to five while another three went to four games. Alan Salisbury was in fine form winning his three singles with good support coming from Chris Hewitt and Graham Thompson who both won twice, while Salisbury and Hewitt took the doubles. The three sets that went to five all involved Nigel Foreshew and he gained a point for Collection as he won two of them, coming from two games down in both to beat Thompson 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 and Hewitt 7-11, 9-11, 14-12, 11-9, 11-9.

In the battle for sixth place in the table Manor Park Express have a slight advantage after their 6-4 win over Ledbury Lions. Pete Griffiths won his three singles sets for Express, with Dave Woodyatt winning twice and Ray Page once. Jim Ahern won twice for Lions, Steve Meredith once and together they won a very close doubles against Woodyatt and Page 11-5, 11-6, 6-11, 10-12, 11-9. Probably the set of the night was the last one in which Ahern came from two games down to beat Woodyatt 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 13-11, 15-13.

20th March 2011

Division Report for week 21:

In division one of the Paperstation Malvern table tennis league Pterodactyl Old Boys moved up to second place in the table following a comfortable 10-0 win over Poolbrook Rangers. The trio of Wayne Chopping, Graham Collier and Ian Bell all won their three singles sets, with Collier and Bell also winning the doubles. For Rangers, the closest they came to winning a set was the final one of the evening when Richard Cullis went down to Collier in four games 11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 10-12.

The previous week Rangers played another team towards the top of the table and this time they went down 9-1 against Broadheath Belters. For Belters, Michael Siket and Brett Brining both won their three singles and the doubles, while John Stalker also won twice. Poolbrook’s consolation came from Richard Cullis who beat Stalker and he also took a game off Siket losing 4-11, 12-10, 8-11, 2-11, while Alisdair Maxwell-Stewart also took Stalker to four games.

Ledbury Collection beat Crackpots 'E' 10-0 thanks to Nigel Foreshew, Harry Jutle and Ann Barns all winning their singles, while Foreshew and Jutle combined to win the doubles. For Crackpots, most resistance came from Colin Dolding who took all three players to four games as did Dave Steen against Foreshew.

Ledbury Lions defeated Scuttling Gang 9-1 in a match where two of the sets required five games. For Lions, Steve Meredith and Gordon Stables both won their three singles, whilst Jim Ahern won twice In the doubles Meredith and Ahern were the winning pair. The two sets that went to five both involved Ray Davies, firstly he saved the whitewash by beating Ahern 11-8, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4 and then later in the evening lost to Stables 11-9, 10-12, 11-8, 8-11, 5-11.

Division Reports for week 20 and Handicap quarter finals:

The surprise result in the quarter finals of the Paperstation Malvern Table Tennis League Handicap Competition was Manor Park Travellers’ overwhelming victory over Poolbrook Rangers. Travellers had a handicap advantage of 20 points when facing the Division 1 team and pulled out all the stops to move into the semi-finals. Stewart Moss gained points off all of his opponents and was well supported by Martin Snee and Ken Hipwell. Richard Cullis fought hard for the Rangers, but it proved to be an uphill battle.

Broadheath Belters overcame a handicap of 270 points to beat Crackpots B by 36. During the course of the evening Brett Brining and the new Malvern champion, Michael Siket conceded a mere 31 points each. Only in the doubles was there a chink in their armour when Ted Cates and Alan Forsdike did well to restrict Brining and Siket to the score line of 11-6, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.

Manor Park Crackpots had greater success when beating Ledbury Lions by 30 points. The turning point in a hard fought encounter was the penultimate set of the evening when Ed Palmer played well to gain a score line of 11-2, 6-11, 11-8, 2-11 against Jim Ahern. Steve Lindner would have been pleased to take a game off both Steve Meredith and Ahern.

In the Secondary Competition, Division 1 leaders Manor Park Cavaliers just pipped the youthful Allsorts team. Mike Keeley, Joe Higgs and Trevor Simmons had to work hard to overcome the handicap of 260, but none of them dropped a game and eased home by 13 points.

Division 2 promotion candidates X Police showed their worth when beating Crackpots E by 48 points. Crucial in their success was their performance in the doubles when Steve Mulka and Toby Wren beat Richard Maddrell and Dave Steen 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7.

Scuttling Gang took on their Division 1 rivals Manor Park Pumas, but found that their 95 point advantage was not enough to beat their obdurate opponents. John Hunt was on top of his game and gave very little away. Ray Davies fought hard for the Scuttling Gang beating Dave Hallam 11-7, 11-9, 13-11, 11-7 and then Jon Dyke 11-8, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.

In division one leaders Manor Park Cavaliers need another four points from their final three matches to regain the title following their 9-1 win over Manor Park Express. Trevor Simmons and Jack Higgs were both unbeaten on the night in both the singles and doubles, while Mike Keeley also won twice for Cavaliers. Dave Woodyatt saved the whitewash for Express beating Keeley in five games, 7-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, while octogenarian Darkie Reynolds took a game off Simmons before going down 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 1-11.

CSSC Ramblers are in second place despite only winning one of their last three matches and this came in their latest match when they beat Crackpots 'E' 7-3. Graham Thompson won his three singles for Ramblers and he was ably supported by both Alan Salisbury and Dave Hayes, who was playing up from the second division, who both won twice. For Crackpots Colin Dolding won twice, both involving five games, firstly he beat Hayes 9-11, 11-3, 11-4, 6-11, 11-8 and then Salisbury 11-8, 11-7, 11-13, 5-11, 11-9 before teaming up with Dave Steen to win the doubles in straight games. Disappointingly for the second time this season Ramblers were only able to field two players against Broadheath Belters and they went down 6-4. Chris Hewitt won twice for Ramblers and Graham Thompson won once and together they won a tight doubles against Michael Siket and Brett Brining 11-9, 15-13, 11-3. For Broadheath Brining won once and Siket won both his singles including a win over Hewitt in straight games 11-7, 11-5, 11-8 to secure the victory. In Ramblers third game they drew 5-5 against Pterodactyl Old Boys thanks mainly to Chris Hewitt who won his three singles which included beating Dave White 9-11, 11-8, 14-12, 7-11, 11-9 and Wayne Chopping in the final set of the evening, 11-8,11-8,11-9 while Graham Thompson and Alan Salisbury both won one each. For Old Boys Chopping and White both won two each and the doubles. In Old Boys next game they played Ledbury Collection and were without Chopping and Ian Bell so they called Toby Wren up from division two, while Collection were without both Nigel Foreshew and Paul Smyth and did likewise in calling Matt Hodges up to play. As it turned out the match ended in a 5-5 draw, Harry Jutle won his three singles for Collection with Ann Barnes winning once and together they won the doubles. For Old Boys Dave White won twice as did Wren, while Graham Collier also won once. Two of the sets went to five games, Wren recorded a very creditable win beating Barnes 11-5, 3-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7 while Jutle defeated White in the final set of the evening to secure the draw 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 6-11, 11-7. Even though Hodges didn't win a set he played well, taking two of his sets to four games and was unlucky to lose to Collier 12-10, 8-11, 8-11, 10-12.

Manor Park Pumas recorded a 10-0 win over Poolbrook Rangers, Jon Dyke, Dave Hallam and John Hunt all won their three singles with Dyke and Hallam also taking the doubles. For Rangers most resistance came from Richard Cullis who took a game off both Dyke and Hunt before almost saving the whitewash in the final set of the evening against Hallam losing 5-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 10-12.

X – Police have put themselves into third place in Division 2 with a maximum points win over Abbeydowne. Matt White, Steve Mulka and Toby Wren won all their singles sets, with Wite and Wren  taking the doubles.

After winning two singles for Devils in his last set of the evening Paul Lythgoe pulled a muscle and not only conceded that set, but is probably out for the rest of the season. Liz Hallam and Denis Chetwood each won one for Devils, but Charlie Burford won three and Ian Sage two. Together they won the doubles for Dynamos.

Ted Cates and Stan Ginn both won two sets and Alan Forsdike one for Crackpots ‘B’, with Cates and Forsdike taking the doubles against Allsorts. Stan Mason was the best player of the night with three wins and Rory Britain won one.

Devils were a player short against Manor Park Travellers, but Liz Hallam managed to save a whitewash by winning one set. Ken Hipwell and Martin Snee both won two, whilst Alan Preece won one for Travellers. Hipwell and Snee won the doubles.

An evening of long games was played between Dynamos and Manor Park Crackpots. Three sets went to five games and four other to four games. Stephen Lindner played seventeen games in winning three singles sets and the doubles, Ed Palmer won two and Will Jones one for Crackpots, while Charlie Burford won two and Ian Sage one for Dynamos.

13th March 2011

Malvern Championships:

Malvern League’s Individual Championships, held at The Forum, Malvern Theatres attracted over 50 players with ages ranging from nine to over 70. Fourteen year old Michael Siket was the star of the day, winning all the singles events he was involved in. The Main Singles, sponsored by PaperStation Ltd. was won by Michael Siket with an emphatic victory over the previous year’s champion Wayne Chopping. The main features of Michael’s game are great agility, and the ability to counter hit and block his opponent’s topspin drives, often from the back of the court. In the Roy Holland Veterans’ Singles, Dave White beat Nigel Foreshew in a close encounter that went to five games. Both players have only recently qualified to play in this event. In the Express TV Main Doubles, Dave White & Alan Salisbury, who had dominated this event until they lost last year, regained the title with a win in four games over Brett Brining & Michael Siket. The Brian Thompson Division 1 Singles event saw Michael Siket gain another comfortable win over Joe Higgs in straight games. Former Junior Craig Preece won the Ledbury Exhaust Division 2 Singles with an easy straight games win over Toby Wren, and in the Meredith Brothers Division 2 Doubles, Ken Hipwell & Martin Snee were too strong for last year’s finalists father and son team of Steve & James Mulka. The Ladies Singles competition saw Ann Barnes retain her title for the sixth year running with a win over Liz Hallam, and Ann was in action again in the Mixed Doubles, winning this title with partner Nigel Foreshew for the sixth successive year. An innovation at this year’s Championships was an Inter Divisional Doubles event which paired players from Division 1 with players from Division 2 based on the rankings in their respective divisions. This produced a number of interesting matches in which many Division 2 players raised their game to match their higher division partners. Good performances were registered by Rory Brittain, Liz Hallam, and Ted Cates, who with partner Mike Keeley gained the title with a four game win over Ed Palmer & Dave White. As predicted Michael Siket gained an easy straight games win over Matt Hodges in the Junior Singles competition. Several events were organised and run by the league’s coaches for young players from the coaching club, held on Sunday evenings during the season at Dyson Perrins Sports College. In the Mixed Cadet (Banded) Singles event the winner was Dan Edmunds who earned a place in the main Cadet Singles, sponsored by Paytons Solicitors, against Michael Siket. Considering that he has had little experience of competitive play, Dan acquitted himself well in losing to Michael by a respectable score. The Girls Cadet (Banded) Singles saw Ellen Wikeley gain victory over Joanna Tyler and Zoe Snee in a round-robin.

In an enjoyable evening the result was in doubt until the last game when Travellers emerged triumphant by a 13 point margin. The game of the night was in the doubles where Jack and Joe beat Wayne and Dave 11-6, 4-11, 14-12, 18-16 in a set which was full of superb attacking rallies and the odd slice of luck! Handicap Round 1 Report:

There were some very close matches amongst the early games in the 1st round of the handicap competition of the Paperstation Malvern table tennis League. Manor Park Travellers with a handicap of 89, managed to beat Crackpots E by 4 points in a match that fluctuated throughout the evening. Martin Snee helped Travellers’ cause with a 16-14, 11-4, 11-8, 11-4 win over James Palmer. Ken Hipwell took a game off Dave Steen and 2 games off both Colin Dolding and Palmer. Alan Preece picked up important points to keep Travellers in the match. The doubles was closely contested before Crackpots emerged 2 points to the good in a scoreline of 11-9, 5-11, 11-8, 11-8.

Dukes Way Dynamos did well in their encounter with Division 1 high fliers Broadheath Belters. John Phillips dropped only 3 points in his game against Geoff Woodward 18-16, 12-10, 8-11, 7-11 and later in the evening Phillips and Charlie Burford gave a good account of themselves in the doubles losing 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 12-14 to Michael Siket and Brett Brining. In the singles Siket and Brining held their nerve to give Belters the victory by 8 points in an evening enjoyed by all players.

Crackpots B kept the Division 2 flag flying with a 7 point victory over Ledbury Collection. Crucial in their win were the games won by Ted Cates and Stan Ginn against Paul Smythe. Poolbrook Rangers had a tough match against Ripple and emerged with a 6 point victory thanks to some convincing play in the singles by Richard Cullis. Ripple did not give in without a fight, Roger Davies took points off both Nick Haggar and Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart. Mark Davies played well to take a point off Maxwell-Stewart. The doubles couldn’t have been much closer with Roger and Peter Nash again taking just 1 point off the Poolbrook pair 11-3, 13-15,10-12, 8-11.

Division 2 rivals X Police and Manor Park Crackpots played out a tense encounter before Crackpots emerged triumphant by a margin of 15 points. Stephen Lindner provided the cornerstone of the victory when he beat Toby Wren and Steve Mulka, but he received good support from both Ed Palmer and Will Jones. For X Police, Matt White remained unbeaten all evening, but had a real tussle with Jones before winning 17-15, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9.

Abbeydowne beat Scuttling Gang by 31 points, but the margin was greater than it might have been because a pulled muscle meant that Don James had to concede the 9th game of the evening. Bill Lucas, Len Hitchman and Roy Holland had played well to put Abbeydowne in a winning position.

CSSC Nomads had an advantage of 120 points in the match against Ledbury Lions, but Lions chipped away at the handicap throughout the evening to emerge with a 38 point victory. Dave Hayes briefly gave Nomads hope when he came back to gain a 2 point advantage over Steve Meredith in a scoreline of 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7. Otherwise Meredith, Richard Smith and Jim Ahern moved through to the next round with comfort.

In Division two half the sets in Crackpots ‘B’s match with YMCA Vulcans required extra games. Beryl Shammon had two sets of five games and a successful doubles win, with Dave Watton in four games. In her fifth game against Tim Snee she was 8-2 down, but fought back to win by 13-15. Her two wins were supported by Dave Watton, with three and Ewan Gear with one. Division Reports for week 4:

Just behind Cavaliers in third place, but with a game in hand are CSSC Ramblers who kept up their one hundred percent start to the season by beating Manor Park Express 8-2. Chris Hewitt and Graham Thompson both won their three singles and the doubles, with Express gaining a point thanks to Pete Griffiths and Dave Woodyatt who both beat Alan Salisbury 11-9, 16-14, 11-9 and 11-5, 8-11, 4-11, 11-5, 13-11 respectively.

For Lions Jim Ahern won twice with Mike Morgan and Gordan Stables both winning once. James Palmer was particularly unlucky not to register a win as he lost to Ahern 12-10 in the fifth and to Stables in a very close set 12-14, 13-11, 8-11, 11-9, 8-11.

In division two Ken Hipwell and Martin Snee both won two singles and the doubles, together, for Manor Park Travellers, but Dave Hayes was in top form and won three for CSSC Nomads. Hayes was supported by Adrian Fray and Tony Hughes with one win each, which meant that the match was a draw. Alan Preece was unlucky not to pick up a set because he only lost his first game against Adrian by 11-13, then won the second by 11-9 and in their fourth game he lost by 15-17.

Another draw in the division was between Dynamos and Ripple. John Phillips won all his singles, only dropping one game and then partnered Alison Sage in a doubles victory. Alison also won a singles set. Roger Davies and Brian Gregory both won two, whilst Peter Quy one for Ripple.

In Division 2 Roger Davies was the only player able to win a set for Ripple when they played Manor Park Travellers. Five sets did go to four games and two of them to five, but only one game went beyond 11 all.

Bill Lucas won two sets for Abbeydowne and partnered Roy Holland to win their doubles. For Crackpots ‘B’ Tim Snee was in fine form, winning all his sets, with Ted Cates and Alan Forsdike each winning two. The evening was certainly a long one because only one set was won in straight games, four sets went to five games, fourteen of the games were only won by 2 points and another nine by three points.

In the match played between YMCA Vulcans and Dukes Way Dynamos, Vulcans were winning by 5 sets to 3 when one of the Dynamos players, who was playing at the time, was called away to a family emergency and they abandoned the rest of the games. The committee will make a decision on how the result will be recorded.

Division Reports for week 2:

In division one of the Paperstation sponsored Malvern table tennis league Manor Park Cavaliers remained at the top of the table following a 10-0 win over Crackpots 'E'. However, the result was not as straightforward as the score line suggests, with three of the sets going to five games and another four of the sets going to four games. Colin Dolding went down 11-8 in the fifth to Joe Higgs and Richard Maddrell was even more unlucky losing to Trevor Simmons 12-10 in the decider after leading for most of that game. The doubles also went to five with Higgs and Simmons beating Maddrell and Dave Steen 11-8 in the last game. Mike Keeley also won his three singles for Cavaliers.

Pterodactyl Old Boys bounced back from their opening week defeat by beating Manor Park Express 8-2. Wayne Chopping and Dave White both won their three singles and the doubles together, while Ian Bell chipped in with one win beating Ray Page 7-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8, 12-10. For Express their point came thanks to Pete Griffiths and Dave Woodyatt who won one apiece, with Woodyatt's win over Bell 11-8, 4-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9.

Express's first point of the season came in a 6-4 defeat to Broadheath Belters where three sets went to five games and another five to four. Brett Brining and Geoff Woodward both won twice and they teamed up to win the doubles, with John Stalker winning the other set for Belters. Pete Griffiths won twice for Express, with Dave Woodyatt and Ray Page both winning once.

CSSC Ramblers had a comfortable win over the newly promoted team The Scuttling Gang by the score line of 10-0, Chris Hewitt, Alan Salisbury and Graham Thompson were all undefeated, with Ray Davies playing well against Salisbury before going down 11-8, 6-11, 12-14, 11-8, 9-11 and he also took a game off Hewitt as did Kevin Howard against Thompson.

Ledbury Collection defeated the other promoted side Poolbrook Rangers also by a 10-0 score line with Nigel Foreshew, Ann Barnes and new signing Paul Smyth all undefeated, but it was not all one way traffic as six of the sets went to four games, with Nick Haggar, Richard Cullis and Alasdair Maxwell-Stewart all taking a game off at least one of their opponents.

In Division 2 Ripple’s Roger Davies beat all the Devils players quite easily and Brian Gregory also won his three sets in straight games, but had some closer scores. Paul Lythgoe saved the whitewash for Devils by winning against Peter Quy 11-8 in their fifth game. Liz Hallam and Lythgoe managed to win one game in the doubles.

The following evening Ripple were again in action against Manor Park Crackpots and this time Paul Davies was playing instead of Gregory. Davies had a really good game with Ed Palmer and only lost by 11-7 in their fifth game. Stephen Lindner won two singles and the doubles with Palmer, earning the Crackpots a point. Roger Davies again won all three singles of his for Ripple.

Alison Sage, playing in her last match before returning to university, won three singles for Dynamos. Her father, Ian, won two and Charlie Burford won three for them. Bill Lucas won one singles and the doubles with Roy Holland to give Abbeydowne a point from a match in which only two sets were won in straight games and twelve games were won by just two points.

A score of 1-9 looks an easy win for X-Police, but five sets needed extra games and twelve of the 38 games played were won by two points and another six by three. Stan Mason won the first set of the evening for Allsorts and his other two singles went to five games. Matt White and Steve Mulka won three singles, whilst White and Toby Wren the doubles for X-Police.

Division Reports for week 1:

The new season for the Malvern table tennis league as sponsored by Paperstation is under way with just one result in division 1 and three in division 2. In division 1 the only result in was very significant, with Manor Park Cavaliers catching last years champions Pterodactyl Old Boys cold by beating them 7-3. Three of the first four sets went to five games with Old Boys winning two of them, but in the end Cavaliers came back to win with Jack Higgs winning his three singles. Good support came from his brother Joe, who won twice and the doubles alongside Mike Keeley who won once. For Old Boys Wayne Chopping won twice with Dave White chipping in one win.

The new season for the second division of the Malvern Table Tennis League has started with three rather one sided matches, but with quite interesting points in them. Against CSSC Nomads, Manor Park Allsorts managed to get a point thanks to Stan Mason beating Adrian Fray in straight games and Geoff Davies 11-9 in the fifth game. Tony Hughes took three for Nomads and paired with Adrian to win the doubles.

Devils were a player short against YMCA Vulcans and in spite of Paul Lythgoe’s efforts in winning a set they ended up without a point. Craig Preece played extremely well and won both his sets comfortably, but Paul took both Beryl Shammon and Phil Lewis to five games.

Bill Lucas took a set for Abbeydowne, but Dean Lewis and Martin Snee each won three, with Ken Hipwell two for Manor Park Travellers. Martin and Dean won the doubles.
